LUCIE FOUNDATION PROGRAMMING SPOTLIGHT: 2012 APA/LUCIE FOUNDATION PROFESSIONAL SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT DONNA J. WAN.
As we wind down the year, we are thrilled to share work completed by Donna J. Wan, recipient of the 2012 APA/Lucie Foundation Professional Scholarship. As a result of the scholarship, she was able to expand upon her body of work, Last Views.
"This project is about capturing the last views of people who have purposely traveled to natural places to kill themselves. In 2011 after the birth of my daughter I developed a severe case of postpartum depression and considered taking my own life. I imagined I would drive to the California coast where I could look out onto the magnificent ocean as I jumped off a steep cliff. Since then I have (recovered and) learned that many suicidal people have similar inclinations. They travel near or far to well-known or obscure natural places to end their lives. For many, the last thing they want to see is a beautiful view of the mountain, forest, valley, or water before they kill themselves. There is even a term for such places – “suicide destinations.”
Using the funds provided by the APA/Lucie Foundation scholarship grant, I have been travelling to several of these places and walking along the paths these people took as they approached a cliff, crossed a bridge, or neared an ocean before committing suicide. But, instead of documenting the specific whereabouts or structures of these places, I have been taking pictures of the views that these people might have seen before they jumped, poisoned, or hung themselves. I have been purposely photographing from the perspectives of looking up at the sky, down at the water or crags, and straight-ahead but far away. My photographs are meant to capture what I imagine the last views of these landscapes to be for these people and, perhaps, to provide some understanding of why they might have chosen their places and what they might have felt or experienced during their last moments". - Donna Wan.
