‘Eyes in Gaza’ gives an intimate look through the lens of the photojournalists experiencing the Israel-Palestine conflict firsthand. As social media remains an important avenue for dissemination and change, we are allowed more than ever a personal account of current events. Each image throughout the exhibition is a segment of the overall story; a moment in time of one of the longest and most complicated conflicts in modern history.
Comprised of selections from the 2023 Lucie Impact Award winners, ‘Eyes in Gaza’ features the photography and instagram feeds of twenty-two photojournalists and press photographers working in the Gaza Strip: Dawoud AboAlkas, Samar Abu Elouf, AbdelHakeem Abu Riash, Mohammed Al Masri, Saher Alghorra, Loay Ayyoub, Motaz Azaiza, Mohammed Baba, Mahmoud Bassam, Mohammed Dahman, Majdi Fathi, Mahmud Hams, Ahmad Hasaballah, Mohammed Jadallah Salem, Suhail Nassar, Haitham Nuralden, Yasser Qudih, Mohammed Talatene, Bashar Taleb, Mohammed Zaanoun, Ahmed Zakot, and Abed Zagout.
Since 2018, the Lucie Impact Award has been presented to a photographer who created the most substantial journalistic contributions that year. Past winners include John Moore, Tyler Hicks, Malike Sidibe, Fabio Bucciarelli, Paul Ratje, and Lynsey Addario. For the first time since the inception of the award, a group of photojournalists has received the high honor for their collective coverage in a harsh and unforgiving environment. By putting their life on the line, these twenty-two individuals were able to bring never before seen imagery of a quickly progressing conflict in real time to thousands worldwide.
This exhibition is made possible by the Lucie Foundation and curated by Alice Dison and Theo Carol.
The exhibition “Eyes in Gaza” presents a vital collection of works by 22 photographers who have turned their lenses toward the realities of life in Gaza during the Isreal-Palestine conflict. This exhibition aims to create a platform for dialogue and reflection in which we hope to challenge stereotypes and promote a deeper connection to the individuals being directly affected by this conflict. Each image serves as a poignant reminder of the power of visual storytelling to foster empathy and raise awareness in a world often detached from these harsh realities.
This body of work transcends mere documentation; it invites viewers to engage with the complex narratives of resilience, trauma, and humanity that have emerged amid ongoing conflict. Through diverse styles and perspectives, these photographers illuminate the lived experiences of Gazans, offering profound insights into their struggles and hopes during an incredibly challenging period. We invite you to explore these powerful narratives and join us in recognizing the humanity that persists even in the face of adversity.
