2024 TRADITIONAL CATEGORY WINNER:

FIRST

Say Less / Dr. Greg Gulbransen

GOST Books

As a Pediatrician/Photographer interested in public health issues related to youth, I decided to document the number one killer of youth in America today, gangs and guns. I documented the life of Malik, a leader of a Crip set in the Bronx while he suffered as a para paraplegic in his wheelchair. Malik, a father of a three year old boy, requires daily medical care and showering by his gang members and family while living in public health housing close to the rival gang who tried to kill and his friends. Although we are from different worlds, Malik and I both have inner demons which possess us.

OTHER

Mi’raj / J Carrier

Tis Books

Photographed over several years in Palestine and Israel, Mi’raj builds on the ideas and themes explored in my first book Elementary Calculus (Mack, 2012) – distance, destination, hope, and providence – while scrutinizing more recent preoccupations – faith and futility. Reckoning with the material world – the facades and facets of facts and fictions – it endeavors to reveal the immaterial essence of a land tragically rent between the sacred, the ideological, and the actual.
