SNAPSHOP! 2016 Workshops
SNAPSHOP! will take place over four consecutive weeks in February and March, during the course of which students will be paired with established photographers who will impart practical, technical, and aesthetic knowledge of crafting a photographic image.
The 2016 installation of SNAPSHOP! is conducted in partnership with Educare, a Los Angeles-based youth development after school program, and Los Angeles Unified School District. In the spirit of this collaboration, the 2016 installation of SNAPSHOP! will be hosted at Diego Rivera Learning Complex and Bell High School.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
During this class we will look at photographs and make our own photographs in many different ways.
When we looks at photos, we will ask, “Why are they important? Why do people take photographs? Why would I take a photo? What am I trying to say?”
Students will learn the basics principles of light, exposure, color, and composition, but will begin taking photos through their life in this class. We will look at portrait and street photography, celebrity and music photography, fine art, historical and documentary photography. Students will make art journals and start to develop their own personal style.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Classes will give students the chance to explore objects beyond how they are typically used or how they normally appear. We will look at other photographers who have used objects to tell their stories, create metaphors, build narratives and show ideas about beauty and the grotesque. Through controlling elements like lighting, composition, collage, sequence, and language students will find their own insights and expressions about the world they live in.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This class will give students a chance to look at and explore the idea of what makes a community. We will look at their own homes and neighborhoods and examine the idea of the comforts of home. Using a photojournalist’s eye we will look around us to record what bring us joy and creates a sense of calm and safety. Perhaps we will talk to others in their neighborhood to understand their idea of home, and photograph in a more conceptual way the ideas that communicate the meaning of home. We might explore the idea of community with people of varying backgrounds and economic levels, to see in our challenging times, what human beings need to feel safe, secure and at home and how they create their safe space.
Saturday class, being 4 hours, will allow for some one-on-one instruction and guidance. Also some time to review technical questions and challenges that have come up during the week.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
What can we learn about ourselves and the world around us through the practice of Street Photography? What does it take to capture the decisive moment or grab a beautiful street portrait? Action on the street is constantly changing, and in order to capture it, a photographer must be quick, smart and discreet. In this class, we will explore the world’s most iconic street photographers (such as Garry Winogrand, Vivian Maier and Mary Ellen Mark) by viewing their images and discussing their techniques in the classroom. Then we’ll hit the streets to practice. You will learn techniques to help you capture complex, colorful and energetic images as well as learn new ways to approach people for street portraits.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
The focus of this class will be to forget about the technical side of photography. Ideas and feelings are what the photographs should communicate through the student’s vision and emotion. Students will learn to solve creative problems by stimulating their thinking process using props, models and compositional theories.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course of photography focuses on candid situations with an emphasis on public places, people and night locations. Utilizing the Los Angeles urban backgrounds, students will learn to observe and capture social interactions, decisive moments and deliver true depictions of everyday street culture. This class emphasizes on attaining an acute eye through the aesthetics of capturing scenes, objects and environments. Students will learn how to create striking night images, how to capture and balance the city lights against the dark skies, and experiment with long exposures on some great locations.
